“She turned me into a newt!”

Well, an eft, actually. I found this little eft late at night on a sidewalk after heavy rains. (The one other eft I have found was during a heavy rain as it wandered across a road in mid-day.) Length was about 7cm. It was on the concrete, frozen in a warning poze, with its back arched up and tail curled. I think I’ve seen an illustration of this–it is supposed to display the red spots. (I did not have my camera with me.) I captured it and kept it for a day to get some photos. I placed it on this moss and it froze for a moment, then began lumbering off in a rather deliberate manner. Funny, it did not attempt to burrow like other salamanders and lizards–I guess it trusts in its chemical defenses. I believe the red spots are thought to be aposematic, and they are known to have toxic skin secretions–more information here.

"… I got bettah…"
Way too cute!! Love him and his spots and his pose – to humans, it’s just cute.
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Stuff With Four Legs, and we’d love to have this added to the group!
Beautiful Salamanders…….Excellent.
We used catch the adults while wading at a small state park in upstate New York…a highlight of our summer family picnics. (Not sure my older sisters would agree …)
These red efts are handsome little creatures!!
Beautiful animal.
